I Love My Hot Chocolate

1.  it's sooo deliciously chocolately, not just sugar-sweet like the pre-mixed stuff or the other homemade mixes I've tried over the years
2.  I've got a big supply.
3.  I think it's cheap (if I was better at math and not so lazy, I would figure it out; I buy my Ghirardelli bars on sale for $2).

Cocoa Mix (from Good Housekeeping January 2009)

In food processor, process:
1 and 1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 and 1/4 c. sugar
6 oz. semisweet chocolate, broken up (your hot chocolate will be as good as the chocolate you use, so pick your favorite!  I used Ghirardelli dark chocolate )
1/4 tsp. salt

Blend until almost smooth.  Store in airtight container at room temperature.  Makes about 3.5 cups, a nice big supply.

To mix up the hot chocolate, add 1-3 Tbs. mix to 1 cup cold milk and heat (I use the microwave).

Variations listed that I want to try, except I love it so much I haven't tinkered with it:
mocha (add some instant coffee)
Mexican (add 2 tsp. cinnamon and 1/4 tsp. cayenne)
vanilla (add half a vanilla bean - pod and seeds - to the food processor)

A nice cup keeps me company as I work very hard at making things for the etsy shop and, very likely, for a local shop as well.  This is new territory for me, so I often wonder if my nervousness is normal or if it's protective shrewdness kicking in.  Time will tell!  But at least I've got a rock solid recipe for hot chocolate.

Mmmm, that sounds good! A warm cup of chocolate is just the thing for taking the chill out of me this time of year! Maybe you could sell hot chocolate packs - with pretty little labels for the different flavors...that could be a *hot* item in your shop ; ) It's certainly a great gift idea!

Such a pretty table spread.

I understand your nervousness--we've got a project brewing of our own and I'm more than a little freaked out. Maybe I need to make a supply of chocolate.

Hey! You could sell that chocolate mix on your etsy shop!

Ooooo, thanks for sharing your recipe, that's the real deal and it sounds delicious. Hmmm, I'm thinking it would make a great gift goody.

As for the nervousness, I'd say it's normal.

It never occurred to me to sell it! But I think there would be copyright issues, since I know where I got the recipe and I haven't modified it at all.

As for gifts, yes, I think this might be a perfect little gift for my kids' teachers.

I think I'll show your recipe to my daughters and see if they want to make it. My family loves hot chocolate!

Aw, I'm sorry you're feeling nervous. I hate nervousness. Hoping it's a successful venture by all standards...

Thank you! For years I've been making my own, but it contains dried milk, which I've recently learned isn't exactly healthy.

Tracy, I hadn't heard that about dried/powdered milk. Do tell more.

Margo, that sounds marvelous! Thanks for the excuse to go stock up on my favorite chocolate.

I like the Mexican variation; it reminds me of the ice cream I got at the beach a couple of years ago.

Do you think you could sell it if you included the source of the recipe?

I agree with Tracy about dried milk; I've stopped using it also. My brain doesn't have enough energy to remember all the details, but I'll check and get back to you!

Margo-

I'm not sure what kind of milk you buy, but we have switched from skim to whole for several reasons. Powdered milk is made from skim milk as the milk fat solids don't dehydrate well.

Here are a few links for you:

Basically, I'm trying to stay away from processed foods as much as possible, and store bought milk is already processed, then once its dried it's processed even more.

I don't care much for cinnamon in my cocoa, but I LOVE a dash of cayenne. You really must try it!

Stephanie, ever since I saw "Chocolat," I've been putting cayenne in my hot choc. I used to put nutmeg in when I was in high school, but I haven't tried cinnamon yet.
