Making Fitted Sheets Fit Again

Anna at Pleasant View said her pillowcases wear out.  In this house, the fitted sheets lose their stretchy elastic before anything else and get turned into quilts and caftans; I have lots of orphan pillowcases.  However, I think I have figured out a way to prolong the life of fitted sheets with dead elastic.

Can you see how I'm illustrating it? I measured 5" down either side of each corner seam. Then I connected those two spots with a 2.5" piece of elastic. Now there's a kind of "hood" that slips over the corner of the mattress. It took me about 10 minutes to fix that sheet.

And when I looked up from the clothesline, I saw the scarlet bush. Flaming beautiful. I've lived in this house eight years and I don't remember noticing this bush before. I want to look around more carefully, with more appreciation.

  1. That is such a great idea! Thankx for sharing it! Most of our old sheets become slips and P.J.s etc. I used sheets to back the boy's quilts too...but there are some sheets that are just perfect for a certain room - now I can prolong their life : )

  2. Sometimes we see things so often we forget to really look at them, beautiful bush, such an intense shade.

Good tip about the fitted sheets.....I hate when fitted sheets go walk-about when you're trying to get your beauty sleep.

  4. Wonderful tip! I have a corner sliding up over the bed as I type this. Would it wake the Hubs, do you think, if I got out my needle and thread to fix it?

  7. I wonder if this would work to make flat sheets into fitted ones? They never seem to make the sheets actually large enough any more. I have to fight like a wrestler to get them on the mattress and we don't have those deep, deep mattresses. They are like 5inches deep!!! I hate sheet makers these days.

  8. How can sheets fit twin and twin xlong?
I bought a bed set for college that says it fits twin and twin xlong beds. How can a fitted sheets fit both sizes when the beds are different lengths?

I enjoy the conversation in the comments - thank you for that. I will answer your questions here in the comments. Please note that I don't want the world wide web to know my family's surnames and location.
