Berrying

It was hot, but the children were so excited to be on the hunt for berries.

It was a lovely evening. We picked eagerly, but still came home with a meager lot. Collecting little pieces of food by hand is time-consuming!

While I picked and inbetween happy scraps of conversation, I wondered what my life would be like if all my food was so hard to come by, if I knew that I had to save up enough food to last through winter. . . I would try to incorporate beauty in my daily work because there surely would not be enough time to sit around doing crafts for leisure.

I wonder if I will be generous enough to share these special berries. . .

I often think that too when bringing in garden produce for the pleasure of eating and not storing up for winter. I often wonder that too when things like this dry spell destroys our produce as to weather there will be enough for everyone to eat as the prices will rise. Lovely pcitures. Enjoy the berries.

Isn't that a tricky one? I want to share because they are so fabulous that it seems a crime to keep it to myself, but on the other hand I went to a lot of work on this picking, harvesting, canning, weeding, etc. so I want to keep it all for ME!

I compromise by giving it away to people I think will really appreciate it and know what went into it. Er, basically that means no one who regularly eats McDonalds and TV dinners is getting any....

That said I was kind of giving out cherry jelly willy-nilly last year because we got so darn much of it and all the cherries were free.
