Funny Fabric on the Ironing Board

My commercial ironing board cover was ironed to literal shreds.  I had a length of funny fabric in my stash that I bought just because I loved it. It's got scenes of a retro family and their pets grooming themselves for the day.  Would this make a shower curtain?  Toiletry bag?  Not sure how other people would use this fabric, but I made a double-sided ironing board cover.  Hopefully I can flip it and get more use out of it.

I used a slightly different method from previous covers I've made.  I did trace my old cover, but I added two sets of ties to the back of the new cover and elastic at the top and bottom.  One method I saw had you make a casing for elastic the entire way around the ironing board cover.  I didn't want to use that much elastic, nor did I feel like inching a piece of elastic through such a tortuously long casing.

In the end, my new cover was a wee bit short and required some diaper pins in the back to keep it in place.  I thought I was cutting generously when I traced the old cover, but oh well.  This is get-er-done-and-functional sewing.  The fabric happens to make me giggle, too.

More giggles. They pounced on the jeans legs I had cut off.  Otherwise, I have no explanation.

Here, Ben made "a guy" for Phoebe out of her duplo blocks and she kissed him.

I LOVE that fabric - it reminds me of the illustrations from Lyle the Crocodile books. Very fun.

I couldn't imagine a better ironing board cover. I've always enjoyed flowers, but the thought of such a humorous cover makes me want to find some fabric like that and make my own. Great use! Your children are so funny. The toddler sure likes that block man.

That fabric is awesome! I've always wanted to make an ironing board cover, but didn't really want to spend the money (or time, to be honest) to make one. So I recently bought one to replace my horrid one that I'd had for too many years. It wasn't that expensive either...cheaper than new fabric. But I love the vintage look!

When I was little, my dad hemmed some slacks for a man in our church (he was shorter than average and single...he'd been "hemming" his slacks with a stapler). I remember using the cut off parts of his slacks as headbands! :D

Perfect fabric for the ironing board cover! Love it!

Your kids have inherited your creativity, and have been encouraged by you to let it flourish.

Thank you for all the smiles today! Love the cover; it's a great use for your fabric because you'll get to enjoy it often. Your two big kids are hilarious in those pictures - they know that half the joke is keeping a straight face! You're getting lots of photos, capturing their childhoods.

That is great fabric! I've had to make a couple of covers for our ironing board as well. Next time I think I should use something other than the white I've used so far. Your ironing board is so cheery.

I love the fabric! I have passed too many pieces that were fun because I did not know what I would do with them but no more!

Lucky you having those fun children at your house and it just gets better as they move into the teen years! Oh to have a house full of teens again.

The fabric is so perfect for an ironing board. I love it! And those crazy hats....

I don't have an ironing board cover. I mean, not something that is removable. I should remedy that.

This makes me want to run out and replace my ironing board cover with a quirky fabric. I love "funny" fabrics in surprising places.

Phoebe - she has really shot up lately! Getting so grown.

love the ironing board cover. I make my own, too. I have 4 just waiting if I need them. Made my latest out of a sheet I found that was utterly beautiful and goes well with my sewing room wall color.

I make ironing board covers myself. I have four of them and I wash them fairly frequently. I use the elastic all the way around method but I use wide self made bias tape for the casing, so it is easy to send the elastic through. Plenty of room.
