Cowboy Playsuit

When I knew I was pregnant with our second child and that he was a boy, I remember how boring I thought boys' clothes were.
I'm finally figuring out what kind of boy's style I can fall in love with. Here Ben is wearing a vintage playsuit (or romper) with an appliqued sailboat and fish. I love it so much I snapped it up at the thrift store when he was a baby.

Nice playsuits are a rare find, so I made one! I complicated matters by setting my heart on a scrap of cowboy fabric from a friend's stash; I needed to piece it and pair it with the light blue in order to have enough. A close inspection would reveal lots of mistakes (and that's after I ripped out numerous seams. . . some twice), but overall, it's pretty cute for everyday play.

Ben is fairly tall and skinny for his age; the playsuit is sized for a shorter, chubbier child. I did check his measurements before sewing, but I'd like to make another one to get a better fit.

Genevieve chose to wear this hand me down Clara dress that day and then asked for a "ballerina bun" in her hair. Is it just my Mennonite baggage or does she look like a little plain Mennonite girl? I kept looking at her in wonder all day.

She is TOTALLY a plain Mennonite girl, no two ways about it.

I love the playsuit...it looks cool and comfy for summer! and the little dress and bun are sweet - just the way little girls should be : ) You're a good mother to let her wear what she likes (I think it's sad when Mom's take their little girls to the Mall and push the fashion model looks)

Very sweet little cowboy outfit! I won't know what to do if we get a boy. I agree, shopping in the boy section of stores isn't nearly as exciting as looking at the little girl side! :-)

Awesome playsuit. I wish I knew what you wanted to hear re: Ev. Was that "Does she look like a little plain Mennonite girl?" with loving sentiment in your tone, or "Does she look like a little plain Mennonite girl?" with your nose wrinkled with distaste?

She looks happy.

Fret not. Her beautiful blue eyes are far from plain. And honestly, Mennonite is in her/your blood, so don't fight it. :-)

Here in the Deep South we call them "button suits" or John-John suits" and they are very popular among mothers of little guys! I love the cowboy suit, darling, and your little plain girl is a cutie, too!

Are you kidding? Those sandals are way too fancy. She could maaaaybe be Hutterite.

Deanna Beth and SE, what I thought about the Mennonite thing was not distaste or fighting it, but just surprise: that a dress and hairstyle could do that. Evie wears dresses often, but the ballerina bun is new as of a few days ago. As I look at the photo again, I think she looks more mature to me too. . .and sweet.

Christian, do you think, in the high North I could get away with saying "John John suit?" Because that is such an adorable name!

I come from a plain Mennonite background--the little girls wear braids, not buns. Not sandals, that I remember. And not a button-all-the-way-down dress! So she doesn't look like "my" kind, at least! ;)
