My Favorite Hair Product is Water

Ok, that title is kind of click-baitish, I know, but I'm here to update you on my curly-girl methods and it's true: water is my favorite product! I started trying the curly-girl method about 2 years ago. I finally feel like I have a handle on what my hair can do and what I'm willing to do for it.

I love the DevaCurl shampoo and conditioner the best - I've tried several different brands by now. My hair is thick but fine, so it can easily get weighed down by the heavy moisture in lots of curl-recommended products. I never skip shampoo, and I do put my hair up after a shower in a regular towel for a few minutes so it's not dripping - I don't rub or pat my hair with the towel, so it doesn't make it frizzy.

Then I put on some DevaCurl Wavemaker and gel and clip up the roots to help hold up the weight of the wet hair so it doesn't dry flat. I use about 5-7 clips, mostly on the top of my head; one key clip pinches a cowlick in the back so it doesn't show so much.  I give it as many hours as I can to dry, remove the clips, and scrunch a little to break up the crunchy gel.  When this bottle of gel is done, I'm going to try something else that doesn't give me the 80s rocker look.  Not my look.

So at bedtime, here's when I use my favorite hair product: I spray my hair thoroughly with water and go to bed with a wet head. Overnight, my curly waves bounce back into soft, generous curls.  In the morning, I ruffle my hand through the curly waves and that's it! I used to try spraying my hair with water in the morning, but it never did much except dripped on my neck.
Bedhead! Still in my jammies so I can show you
I don't know exactly why sleeping with a wet head makes such wonderful hair, but at my fall haircut, the stylist said that's what she does (locals, let me know if you want an amazing DevaCurl stylist who is totally cool with low-maintenance girls like me and a desire to be environmentally friendly).

I only wash my hair every three days, so I get two days off from everything hair-related except for some squirts of water at bedtime.  See? Water is absolutely my favorite hair product.

I think my hair is kind of like yours...very thick, but fine. I was so surprised about a year or so ago, when I got some long layers and brought up the length in the back...and viola, I had waves that I didn't know were there! I don't like to/have time to mess with my hair, so I need a quick and easy fix!!

I'm a fine/straight kinda gal and I'm experimenting with bar shampoo. It's interesting to learn what my hair is actually like (really, really dry) and to find that I do not need a ton of products, which makes me happy for the ocean.

Your curls are gorgeous!

I can't sleep on wet hair because I get horrible bald spots in the back. Even with all dry hair, I get them, so I do the pineapple (a messy bun of the tippy top of my head) to sleep. Maybe I'll try combing, wetting, producting, and then pineappling my hair some night --- might cut down on prep in the morning. (Only problem is, I go running in the morning which tends to destroy any hair loveliness I might have at that moment.....)

Yeah, when I let my hair get long in warm weather, it really flattens it out. And I agree - I don't like to mess much with my hair and I especially don't like to fight it!

The pineapple! So that's what that's called :)
I do get some odd patches from sleeping sometimes, but I don't know, I kind of fluff them out? And I definitely get a weird swirl in the back if I don't pinch it closed with a clip when it's drying.

I grew up with straight as a stick here my whole life until my early fifties and then developed curly hair go figure. My doctor couldn't figure out or my stylist but that's what happened! I had to struggle to learn to figure out how to deal with it since I had never had it and I started using a spray water bottle as well. I don't like blow drying my hair at night before bed after I shower since it gets kind of squashed anyway. so I shower and shampoo before bed towel dry and just go to bed with it wet. In the morning I part it brush it and use a little water to smooth out any really big lumps. Then I use a really narrow straightening iron to do just the bottom since my hair is a little shorter. I have a real similar version of Ally Sheedy's haircut in The Breakfast Club but with a little shorter bangs. I've been doing it for years in the water bottle works great, and I love your haircut!

Your hair looks great! And, what a tremendous solution (lol). I have a lot of hair but I keep it super short, as in butch haircut short. I don't have the skills or the interest in doing anything but running a comb through it after the shower. Wash and go is best!

Discovering the Curly Girl method (and that I have legitimately wavy hair) as an adult has been a revelation. My son has super curly hair, and I’m so grateful that I know what to do with it!

I love the DevaCurl conditioner for wavy hair. I use one of my husband’s old t-shirts and “plop” my hair after showering. I could not believe the difference it made. Your hair looks amazing!

Melanie, you told me about plopping and I did that for a while - I think it has some of the same effects as sleeping in wet hair :)

Your hair looks fabulous with those waves/curls. Glad you are figuring it out. :-) Ever-changing conditions in body and environment keep me on my toes with the "formula" for good curls.

Oh dear, I don't love messing with my hair. Oh well. Pass on your new approaches as you find them, please :)
