Pretty Weeds

I pulled out a weed, thinking what is that, isn't that pretty all those tiny heart-shaped leaves and then I threw it on the pile of yard junk.  And stopped, stunned.  I discarded something just because I didn't recognize it?  Just because it somehow got the label of "weed"?  And shouldn't I, a novice gardener, embrace the plants that volunteer in my yard and grow enthusiastically with imperfect light and water and furthermore survive (sporadic) eradication efforts?  That kind of tenacity is a gift!

My yard would be boring and dreadfully bare if I was the only one choosing and planting the plants.  I welcome the pretty weeds and I'm going to be the one who decides what I'm pulling out, darn it.

And my mind went right to church politics, which we're having at our church right now. I think I sometimes discard ideas outright just because I don't recognize them - the way I was treating the weeds.  So I would like to think for myself and decide after further inspection which ideas (weeds) are worth keeping around.

  1. I definitely have been known to let weeds go until I can absolutely positively id them. Occasionally, one does get a plant they want to keep that way. I highly approve of this action, in all applications.

  2. Wise, wise words, Margo. We are going through something similar in our community and this is such a good approach to take. It is the cause of my "grumpy" post yesterday, and my "being a better person" post coming up on Monday! You have the right approach, for sure.

  3. One woman's weed is another woman's wildflower.

As a former botanist, I applaud your thoughtful decision!

  4. Little phoebe is crawling on wild plantains that are a yummy cooked green. Bunnies also like it. And we have a heart shaped leaf plant here called wood sorrel or sour grass. It gets little yellow flowers so good ! You be amazed what you can eat out of your backyard. And most are medicinal too

  6. To achieve a perfect purity and perfect order in the house is not so easy, especially if you do not know where to get everything you need for this. I myself for a long time looking for something that would be able to facilitate My work and only after a while I was able to settle down, having found this site - http://apromera.com/ my darling finally calmed down. So sincerely advise all those most in need and those who are constantly in search of best quality!
