When I pack salad for a brown-bag refrigerated lunch, I don't dress it in the morning (it would be a disgusting slimy mess after a few hours). I don't put the dressing in a separate little container either (which usually leaks; plus, most of the dressing seems to stay in the container when I try to pour it out).
Instead, I pour the right amount of dressing down into one corner of the plastic container I'm packing the salad in. At lunch, I just mix up the salad and dressing and hey presto! a crisp home salad for lunch.
Is this a trick that everybody knows? It was a new thought to Rebecca, too, but maybe the world is made up of rolling epiphany waves and we're just on a different one from the rest of y'all.
"Rolling epiphany waves," I've got to use that in my everyday conversation someday! It's a great idea and I'd never thought of it before : )
ReplyDelete"Rolling epiphany waves"---brilliant.
ReplyDeleteDoes it not slosh around as you travel? I'm not sure I was ever gentle enough with my lunch to pull this off.
ReplyDeleteGood idea! I've had the same problem too...
ReplyDeleteSara, I suppose it does. I'm not gentle with my lunch, per se. But it's not enough to coat the greens and make it inedible. I usually have to toss the salad when it's lunchtime in order to get the dressing where I want it.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I pack my husband's lunch and usually pour the dressing over all--he's never complained of sogginess but maybe he's just being nice! I'm going to try your approach. The epiphany just rolled its way down here!
ReplyDeleteI have tried this in large mouth canning jars~ putting the dressing in the bottom and layering the salad with sturdier veggies ( carrots, beans etc) on the bottom and the lettuce on the top. A quick shake and the dressing coats everything just before eating. Enjoy your new found salad lunches. ~lisa
ReplyDeleteLisa, that's an excellent tip. I think that would work better than the plastic squares I'm using.
ReplyDeleteI read about this trick on another friend's blog and I think it is genius! That salad looks yummy.
