Making a Modest Hemline

Suddenly I realized that I was avoiding a favorite dress because it felt too short.

I took a cue from Eva and added a colored band to the hem.  However, I made the band extra-long, pinned it around evenly, and then just ruffled it as I went along.

My husband opined that I should use a bit of that solid poppy red elsewhere in the dress, so I used the last scrap as a belt.  I was going to sew it to a buckle, but I like the spontaneous nature of the little square knot.

I did not paint my toes to match my dress, but I was amused by the view from my Sunday afternoon nap.

  2. That is such a great dress! Love the color you chose - poppy red is the best! Could I link back to you from over at my blog? The toes are too cute!

  3. That is a great dress and I love your modification! Where did you find the dress--is it vintage? Or did you make it?

I have sunglasses that are exactly like yours. They may not be the same (mine are from that warehouse of cheap style, target!) but from the distance I could see on the blog they are The Same in every way. I love my aviators and wear them every day.

  5. Eva, yes please, a link is nice!

Polly, it's a dress I got for $30 at the beach a few years ago. I have not yet made a dress for myself, although that's a goal for this year. Also, the aviators were $4 at Penney's :) The only thing I don't like about them is that I can't push them up on my head.

  6. Perfect! In my opinion the added hemline and belt complete the dress. You look classy, summery and cute.

  7. Haven't made a dress for yourself? What about the Disappointed Dress?! Or did you mean a dress you actually wore, and didn't pass off to another teenage friend who wore it despite its ill-fittingness. It was such wonderful fabric! I think it's in the dress-up trunk now.

  8. LOVE IT! Now you can wear that dress for the rest of summer and not have it hiding in your closet. xo

  10. It looks fantastic! I have a tiered skirt that I decided was too long so I took a tier off. Problem is, now it is too short so I've stopped wearing it. Perhaps a thinner tier added to the bottom is just the solution.....

  16. Margo, your husband has a great eye (which is also why he picked you to marry, but I'm digressing). Really, that red belt plus the hem take this dress up a notch. Very, very nice!
