Hot Cereal with a Surprise

Mr. Thrift went away on a weekend bike trip and came back raving about the oatmeal he ate.  My husband is not a big fan of hot cereal, so if he can't stop talking about a delicious hot cereal, I pay close attention.

The men started with a base of steel-cut oats in the crockpot (I just used my hot cereal).  Then they added:
1.  dried cranberries
2. walnuts
3.  a bit of brown sugar, and
4. (surprise!) goat cheese.

This is how we replicated it at home and it was superb.  Usually I eat hot cereal somewhat dutifully. I think it's important to eat plain, simple food sometimes and not depend on our meals for entertainment; nourishment, yes, but entertainment only sometimes.

Later, Mr. Thrift reminded me that the men had added some chopped crystalized ginger, so we are definitely going to try that next time.

I sometimes put crystallized ginger in my muesli - it's great.

Goat cheese - that sounds quite tasty!

Your opinion about not depending on meals for entertainment is right on. :)

Steel cut oats are entertainment to me because I L.O.V.E. them. I eat mine every morning with a swirl of Greek yogurt (now-homemade with local milk!), a spoonful of almond butter, and a banana. Sometimes I substitute cherries for the banana--cherries I froze from my uncle's tree. I love my oatmeal with a passion unspeakable.

I'd never considered GOAT CHEESE!! WHat an addition!!! I may try that. I was hoping your husband's oatmeal would inspire my husband to eat it, but he doesn't like goat cheese at all. (Much to my chagrin.) And the combo of goat cheese and ginger is fascinating!!!!

Oh, and the comment about meals being nourishing and not always entertaining....is so true. This is actually a discussion I have with my husband from time to time. I enjoy simple meals and don't have to have every meal a 'feast' or 'wowee' (my upbringing contributes to this, I'm sure); my husband is more in the wowee camp. I think he understands the value of plain food, but he's far less likely to enjoy it and find value in it than I do.

That sounds like a european muesli I had years ago, hot, with creme friache on top. OMG, it was wonderful! We had a winter wedding, had it on our honeymoon while we watched the snow fall. Perfect!

That looks tasty!

I must confess all I need to make me swoon over oatmeal is a little brown sugar and some evaporated milk :) (you're allowed to gag over that if you like; everyone else does)

Big fan of the steel-cut oats here! And I have had terrific results making them for breakfast in the crock-pot, overnight. I use a 3:1 ratio, water to oats, put that in a smallish bowl & set it in the cooker with water all around, and get that started beore I go to bed. In the morning....well, let's just say that it's wonderful to have that waiting for me when I get up in the pre-dawn hours. I'd never have considered the goat cheese....will try it the next time.
