Real Sushi for a Birthday

Ben just turned four!  First he requested a "Dodger meal" again, same as last year.  Then, a few days before his birthday, I made some quick fake sushi to go with leftover hot & sour soup at lunch.  I grabbed some leftover salad to put in the middle of the sushi, it was that quick and dirty.

But Ben was transfixed.  He changed his mind.  He wanted sushi and miso soup for his birthday meal.

So, in his honor, I finally made real sushi.  I did the rice the right way.  I did not, however, attempt  raw fish.

We had California rolls, avocado rolls, cucumber rolls, and an experimental sweet potato roll which wasn't bad.

Ben has been requesting an "M&M cake like Aunt Shelley made at Thanksgiving" since Thanksgiving.  He wanted to help make it, too.  And then he made a smiley face on top with M&Ms and I totally failed to get a final photo. (It was an Oreo crust, cream cheese layer, chocolate pudding, whipped cream top)

It was a happy birthday. . . . .my sweet little boy who now tells us all the things he can do because he's four, including walking across town to pick up his older sister from kindergarten - by himself.  Dear Ben.

That's one sophisticated four-year-old! My kids can't stand miso soup. I've failed...

Wow....I can't really wrap my mind around a four year old asking for sushi! You are doing some good work there I think! Oh how I wish I'd been exposed to more tastes and food cultures at such a young age!

I failed to take a photo of Matt's last birthday cake which I made. Its not the same thing really, as your story, because Matt didn't decorate it and isn't a sweet little boy, but none the less I was still disappointed with myself. It had turned out well and I so love to document the food that turn out well. Oh well, the experience is the most important part.

I'm glad Ben had a happy birthday!

Awwwwww! I love all the specialness! The cake sounds mmm-mmm good. The sushi, too, especially since I'm not a huge craver of the actual raw-fish containing sorts.

Good job, mama. FOUR years old?! Sigh.

What a delightfully happy post! Four... such a lovely age, when my children turn four I feel as though we are officially out of the trying toddler times.

Little Brother was just asking me today I we can make sushi soon. Your looks delicious, and so does the cake!

Happy Birthday, Ben. You are a dear boy.

Love it! I love how he believes he's so big now that he's four. So sweet!

I'm impressed by his love of sushi. I love it, too, and love making it....he's got great taste for a little guy!

Sushi is my son's favourite food, and we're having it tonight for a treat. I have managed to streamline making it enough to be able to slap some together in the morning for a school lunch.

Here's my big tip. I buy top quality raw fish. As soon as I get it home I use my sharpest knife to cut it into matchsticks. Then I freeze them on a cookie sheet (or whatever). Once they are solid, I put them in a lidded container in the freezer. Then, whenever I want to make sushi, I can grab a few frozen fish matchsticks and roll them into the sushi without defrosting. They defrost fast, so fifteen minutes later the fish is all defrosted and ready to eat.
