Fried Dandelion Blossoms - For Real!

My readers have given me an education about eating dandelion.  Sylvia says you can eat all the parts all the time and Janelle pointed me to a blog with various creative dandelion recipes, including pickling buds to make "capers." (Be still my locavore heart!)


I could not resist the fried blossoms.  I sent my children out to the yard, even though the recent downpour had sort of pulverized the dandelions.  What children don't like to pick flowers?  And what children don't like to make a real contribution to the adult world?  Genevieve and Ben were in raptures.  Since then, Ben keeps bringing me fistfuls of limp dandelion heads, beaming with purpose and pleasure.  I find the piles everywhere and I am charmed.


I've never fried anything batter-dipped before, so I wasn't sure what I was aiming for; I think my batter was a bit thin, so I ended up with little fritters with my sodden flowers instead of puffy individual flowers.  But! the little fritters were fantastic (especially, like all fried things, with cocktail sauce).



Actually, it was a fabulous meal:  pasta salad with oranges, asparagus, feta and mint, plus some cold broiled salmon with rosemary from my mother in law (everything looks better on a robin's egg blue plate - especially peachy colored things). 


Nobody asked about dessert. Should I roast and dry some dandelion roots now, to brew like as a coffee substitute? Hey, if the economy crashes any further, we may be grateful for such quixotic tricks.

I'm still looking for a good recipe that uses violets...

This is fantastic!! Since we allow our yard to run wild with 'weeds' (a term to which I take offense) I have got to try the fried flowers. I did not know you could eat them!

Just ate my farmers' market lunch (apple, spinach-goat cheese omelet) and a little fried dandelion would have been a great addition. Do the flowers have a distinctive taste?

Polly, check out that blog I linked to for lots of details on eating weeds. The dandelion flowers don't taste like much, so the batter should be pretty tasty. But aren't fried things always tasty?!

Yes, everything is good fried. I still really hate dandelions (other than in a bouquet from a child :) (I mean as weeds -- I just hate their little accusing faces -- only in our yard, they are not little, they are bionic), but this is awesome.

This is so good to know! I was thinking about your post when I mowed for the first time this week and was dismayed with all the dandelions that filled the yard. I was thinking it was too bad they were already flowering if that meant I could eat them at least.

What fun! I want to try one of those fried flowers! Especially with the cocktail sauce! The whole meal: excellent!

I tried fried pickles (a TX favorite) for the first time recently. Very enjoyable! ;-)

Thanks for the inspiration! I was going to skip the fried dandelion blossoms this year, but after your glowing review, I may reconsider. I'll have to check the blog about making the buds into capers, now that sounds pretty cool.
