Camera Recommendation

(My friend A's barn, this spring.)

I have a little digital point & shoot that was cutting edge five years ago.  My husband and I are gearing up to think about possibly buying a new camera.

Can you recommend a camera to me?

My main complaint about my current camera is that I cannot take very close-up photos.  I love how my blogger friends do that.  From my limited knowledge, that's a specialized lens, so I need an SLR camera for the lens.  My husband has and knows how to use a "real" camera with all the f-stops or whatever, so he's excited about a fancy camera.  Me - I just want to zoom in on my sewing projects to capture the details and I'm overwhelmed by all the options out there.

I hope you can help get my research started in the right direction!  Thanks in advance.

Oh fun, a new camera! We've had very good experiences with both Nikons and Canons. I have a 1.5 year old Nikon D60 right now, before that we had a Canon Rebel, both are great cameras. Nikon has dropped the D40, D60, D70 labeling, they are now D3000, D4000, etc. The 3000 and 4000 are both great consumer grade D-SLR cameras. Ask Beth (Tis Mercy All) about hers, she has a brand spankin' new Nikon that is similar to mine! Email me specific questions if you have any.

I want a new camera soooo badly. Mine, too, is about six years old, and it acts like it. Some of the food bloggers (Smitten Kitchen and the like) tell you about what type of camera they have in their "about" sections. Good luck, lucky you!

P.S. You may want to consider purchasing a macro lens when you purchase your new camera. The kit lens (the one that comes with the camera) will be good for close up shots, but a macro lens would be even better. I don't have a macro lens so I can't recommend one, but they are nice.

I LOVE my Nikon D40. I got it on ebay (new but about $200 cheaper than in stores). It is such a treat to have a nice camera!

I was in your shoes a year ago, and my husband bought me a Sony Cybershot (model DSC-H10)for my birthday. I think it's a Consumer Reports recommended buy. I can get great close-ups without the special lens. I guess it depends on how technical you want to get. I still feel like it's a very "point and shoot" camera, but it has the close-up detail that I want as well. I've been watching the occasional camera commercial advertising their wide variety of lenses (and it makes me drool) but as the Hubs pointed out, I'm very happy with my current camera. Maybe in another year...

Margo, let's talk. I've had very good luck with close ups with my Canon point and shoot. I want to see yours to see if there's a setting that's hiding away, because sometimes it's through several menus to get it to do what you want. If it doesn't have the feature, then I have a relatively inexpensive type to recommend. Also, of course, love the shot on this post :)

My Canon s5 PowerShot was GREAT for closeups and had decent zoom. It's what I've used for photos on the blog up until about 2 months ago.

It's a simple camera to operate for sure. I was very impressed with it!
